The Eastern Cape Drakensberg

Barrier of Spears, Eastern Cape HighlandsThe southern end of the Drakensberg Mountain Range is situated in the Eastern Cape at its border with Lesotho. The area is also known as the Eastern Cape Highlands or Northern Ukhahlamba – the Xhosa word for ‘Barrier of Spears’.

The Eastern Cape Drakensberg is an unspoiled, mountainous area, with a very low population. Snow falls every year, with the melt off feeding clear, sparkling headwaters that rush down from the mountains, forming pristine rivers. These are ideal for fly fishing, centred on Rhodes, Lady Grey, Barkly East and Maclear.

Our ancient San ancestors also loved this area, and there is a wealth of rock art for the enthusiast.

Wildlife can be seen in the Tussen Twee Riviere and JAK Strydom Reserves, near Aliwal North. The complex and varied natural habitats are home to more than 300 bird species.

The very scenic outdoors is also a hub of eco-adventure activities like hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding. Some major MTB races and marathons take place from Lady Grey. Lady Grey  also hosts a very popular annual Passion Play.

The Eastern Cape Highlands abound with many of the best mountain passes in South Africa and if you enjoy a 4×4 challenge, stunning scenery and photography, then a holiday driving from pass to pass through the villages of the area, is a great option.
