The Elephant Sanctuary, Hazyview, Mpumalanga

The Elephant Sanctuary in Hazyview is one of three elephant sanctuaries owned and run by the same organisation. The other two are in Plettenberg Bay (the Crags) and in Hartbeespoort.

Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary is a bit smaller than the others – with only two elephants at this time, but it is situated on a  600 hectare reserve in the Mpumalanga Lowveld and the two elephants, Kasper ‘the gentle giant” (and he is a giant at 3.3m) and Kitso, are both tame, gentle animals and very used to interaction with humans. The guest programme includes feeding and walking with the elephants and educational programmes.

The reserve also features other wildlife, forested areas with elevated wooden walkways, decks overlooking waterholes, bush, and riverine bush. There is also a Curio Shop for all sorts of ‘Ele’ related souvenirs, and which also helps to raise funds for the sanctuaries operations.

“The Elephant Sanctuary provides a “halfway house” for young African elephants in need of a temporary home. It is the only operation in South Africa that provides for elephants in this way. It is our vision to release all the elephants into an environment where they can be more independent once they are older.”
