Salome Benade’s passion for making guests feel welcome is evident in her smile and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere at the Grapevine Coffee Shop in Citrusdal. The interior, with its green and white colour scheme and white painted furniture creates the perfect backdrop to sipping coffee and enjoying the homemade cakes or the small, delicious, light lunch menu.
As Citrusdal and the Cederberg are home to the rooibos bush, Salome incorporates the local flavour into her food where she can. She serves a tasty rooibos casserole in winter, and adds rooibos to some of her home baked delights like rooibos malva pudding.
Citrusdal is known as one of South Africa’s top orange growing areas, so Salome refuses to serve anything but freshly squeezed orange juice. “If I can’t get fresh oranges, orange juice is off the menu.” she says. She also sells amazing jams made by her 73 year old mother-in-law, who has “just always loved making jams”.
The deck area is the perfect spot for a winter’s day and the air-conditioning inside helps with the summer heat. While you’re in the area, pop into De Lovely next door, run by Salome’s daughters. This gift shop has something for everyone and is well worth a few minutes of your time.
The coffee shop is also a wi-fi hotspot. Address: 30 Voortrekker Street, Citrusdal: +27 (0)22 921-2190
