The Komati River Gorge is sometimes called a ‘mini Grand Canyon’, but unlike the Grand Canyon, the sandstone cliffs of this steep cut in the earth on the Mpumalanga Highveld support a great deal of vegetation and animal-life.
Animals and birds that you can see there includethe rare Bald Ibis bird, a variety of small and large antelope and large game such as Giraffe and Zebra.
Most of the Gorge area is privately owned reserve, and so access to the Gorge to go swimming, birding, picknicking or fishing is necessarily through a private lodge – which also widens considerably the scope of the activities that can be enjoyed in this lovely and dramatic wilderness – from hiking to MTB, horse-riding to quad-biking.
One of these private reserve lodges is the Komati River Gorge Lodge and Fly-fishing Wildlife Reserve.
