The Phakisa Raceway is a world class motor and bike racing track just outside Welkom in the Goldfields Region of the Free State.
The Phakisa Raceway is owned and run by the Phakisa Major Sports Events & Development Corporation in Welkom, and hosts a number of National and International level races, including the South African Motorcycle Grand Prix, the Wesbank Super Series and the Midas Historic Tour.
Phakisa (‘Get Moving’ in Sotho) was built in the late 1990’s. The raceway incorporates two tracks – a Formula 1 Grand Prix flat circuit and a Super Speedway Oval. The Grand Prix Track is rated as one of the safest circuits on the GP tour, but also one of the most demanding, and is also considered one of the best testing tracks for motor manufacturers.
“MotoGP, organizers of the World Grand Prix circuit, the riders, their retinues and sponsors have pronounced Phakisa, along with its staff and facilities, to be a superb venue and rate the track as one of the best in the world.”
Getting there: Phakisa is situated just off the R70 north of Welkom.
