South Africa

Your world in one place

The Pretoria Botanical Gardens, Tshwane, Gauteng

The Pretoria National Botanical Garden just outside the Pretoria CBD is one of eight gardens run by the South African National Biodiversity Institute.

The Gardens are comprised of several biome areas and plant collections that include many indigenous and exotic species of rare and endangered plants and trees – many of which are also home to small game and a variety bird species. There is of course a concentration on South African indigenous and endemic plants.

The Gardens are a lovely place to picnic or simply while away the hours while enriching the senses, while for those with a keen interest in botany, it’s a full day. You can purchase pot plants at a nursery and there is a tea garden for refreshments. Concerts are also often held at the Gardens.

The Botanical Garden also includes the National Herbarium, which contains the largest botanical database in the whole of Africa with both physical dried specimens and accompanying computer records, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, and an educational institute that offers environmental workshops.

The Garden is open 7 days a week from 6am to 6pm.

For more info on the  Gardens and the plants that you can see and purchase there.

Getting there: The Garden is located at no. 2 Cussonia Ave., Brummeria, Pretoria.
