The charming and rural Transgariep town of Smithfield has attracted quite a number of artists over the years, many of whom have settled in the ‘far away from it all’ and picturesque town – inspired by the surrounding countryside, the starry nights, the close-knit small town atmosphere and the natural and cultural heritage of both Smithfield (the 3rd oldest town in the Free State and chock full of heritage buildings, Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture) and the Transgariep (Xhariep) Region.
These artists, as well as some ‘outside artists’ exhibit their work and inspirations in The Red Barn Art Gallery – a beautifully restored red barn on Wessels Street. The Gallery is sustained not only by the inspired but by Smithfield’s location and popularity as a stop-over on N6, and is well –maintained with regular exhibitions.
Take a piece of the Transgariep with you when you leave Smithfield.
