The Tatham Art Gallery, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Tatham Art Gallery, PietermaritzburgThe Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg dates back to 1903, and is one of seven major art museums in South Africa. The gallery forms part of the Msunduzi Municipality and is governed by a Board of Trustees.

Mrs Ada Tatham was a leading figure in the establishment of the gallery, having collected funds from interested citizens and traveled overseas to acquire works for the collection. The gallery hosted its first exhibition in 1923 in the Pietermartizburg City Hall. The collection was housed for many years on the second floor of the city hall, but moved to its current premises in 1990.

The first curator of the museum was appointed in 1961 and in 1968, a section of the museum was devoted entirely to South African artwork, for the first time. Visit the Tatham Art Gallery.
