The Vukani Arts Association was started in 1972, after rural people in the Zululand area had been weaving baskets as a project to make funds for food during the drought of the late 1960’s. The crafters chose the name Vukani, which means , “wake up and get going”.
Today, the Vukani basket designs are renowned by established collectors throughout the world. The Vukani Collection Trust was formed in 1991 and the museum opened in 1994, moving to its present location in 2001. The building was designed specifically for the collection by architect Paul Mikula.

Getting there: From Durban, take the N2 going North along the coast. Turn off at the R66 going into Eshowe. Here, follow the signs to the Vukani Zulu Cultural Museum.
