If there is any place to enjoy a spectacular hike, De Hoop Nature Reserve is it. The Whale Trail of 54 km from Potberg to Koppie Alleen has 5 overnight stops. It offers stunning views from the Potberg Mountains and beautiful beaches, tidal pools and dunes along the coast.
De Hoop is is regarded as one of the best whale watching spots in the country and from August to December there is and excellent chance of spotting whales. As De Hoop is a protected area for the Cape floral kingdom, you will take in a vast array of indigenous plants and flowers too. All bases are covered for an amazing hike which has become very popular, so booking is essential.
Vehicles are left at Potberg and a shuttle service is provided to take the hikers from the end of the trail back to their cars at Potberg. The trail has been accredited by Southern Africa Trail Owners Association.
Overnight accommodation is not roughing it by any stretch of the imagination – you get to stay in a range of cottages, although you will need your own bedding. That said, you don’t have to carry all your own luggage, as what you don’t need in a daypack is taken for you to the next lodging.
