The brand new Wits Art Museum is an initiative of the University of the Witwatersrand to exhibit and treasure the artistic heritage of South Africa. “Art can teach..so many things” “One looks at our species…we are the only species to create art” “Art has a critical role to play…around the development of cultures.” The museum displays selections of a collection of around 9 000 pieces comprising traditional African art, contemporary and historical South African Art and fine art – from headdresses to paintings, from pre-colonial to modern art. Special exhibitions and book launches are also hosted.
