Tiffindell Ski Resort will be up and running again in 2013

In 2011, we wrote that the Tiffindell Ski Resort near Rhodes was no longer operational. Tiffindell had closed down and the chalets and ski slopes were closed pending new operations. However, rumour has it that it may be re-opening soon…! Tiffindell was sold at auction, and the resort is up and running again since 2013.

The Tiffendell Ski Resort in the Eastern Cape Drakensberg was, and will again be, South Africa’s only ski resort. Situated 24km from the town of Rhodes on the slopes of the 3001m Ben McDui Peak, the resort offered mountain chalet accommodation with 2km of ski slopes, but was reported up for auction earlier this year. It was sold in early July 2012, and the new owners are preparing to re-open the resort.

In addition to skiing and snowboarding in the winter months, Tiffendell also offered hang-gliding and paragliding, fly fishing, horse riding and mountain biking.

Though the ski slopes were maintained with artificial snow (the natural snow melts too quickly in the daylight hours most of the time), Tiffindell was more than just a unique resort in South Africa, it was a labour of love set up by  local ski enthusiasts. We hope to see it back soon, the snow machines filling the air with flakes and the sun sparkling off the peaks of the Drakensberg mountains behind the pistes – and a lot of South Africans (and others) having a whole lot of fun!
