Tweeling, Northern Free State

Tweeling, Northern Free State, South Africa

The tiny hamlet of Tweeling offers a breakaway that goes back in time, only a 2 hour drive from Johannesburg – making this tiny town on the banks of the Vaal River the ideal weekend away for people who really want to get away from it all.

Surrounding farms offers outdoors activities, with an emphasis on horse riding, while Tweeling itself offers a couple of Art Galleries, quaint shops, pretty buildings and country accommodation with the kind of hospitality that you will only find in a village where chickens still roam the streets.

The main industry in Tweeling is goose farming, for the use of goose feathers in bedding. The Lions Rest Game Farm 5km north of Tweeling also offers game drives and close encounters with the lions that they breed.

No traffic, no stress, just fresh air and countryside – that is the sweetly named town of Tweeling…

Getting there: Take the N3 south to Villiers. At Villiers, take the R26 for Frankfort, then continue on the R26 as it turns south from Frankfort to Tweeling. Blink and you will miss it!
