Umkomaas Golf Club, on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, began life as a nine hole course way back in 1913. In 1922 the club was formed and in 1932 the renowned Bob Grimsdell re-designed the course and another 9 holes were added. Today it’s a very pleasant seaside course with some seriously challenging holes.
The fairways are undulating and fairly wide. The short rough is cut to a reasonable height but the coastal bush can easily swallow up your ball should your shots go astray. When searching for your ball, beware of snakes. A number of the greens are raised and well protected by bunkers and many of the tees have great sea views.
The clubhouse is comfortable with a ladies bar and a restaurant well known for Sunday lunches. Relax on the patio with a drink and a snack overlooking the first tee with a panoramic sea view. Snacks and drinks are also available at the halfway house.
The pro shop is small but carries a comprehensive range of the essentials.
