South Africa

Your world in one place

Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, South Coast, KwaZulu-NatalUmtamvuna Nature Reserve is about 170 Km from Durban near the town of Port Edward on the border of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. The reserve is an absolute gem – the deep Umtamvuna River Gorge is home to some 1400 flowering plant species, a number of which are endemic to this area. The river makes its way through the gorge to its mouth on a pristine beach.

There are a number of hiking trails, said to be the best on the entire south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, through riverine forest, waterfalls and steep rocky cliffs. The Pondoland grasslands above the gorge burst into spectacular flower in spring and a number of rare trees can be found in the gorge.

Both the Cape vulture and fish eagle breed in the reserve and many other bird species have been recorded. Bushbuck, serval, baboon, samango monkeys, blue and grey duiker and common reedbuck occur. No accommodation or camping facilities are available in the reserve.

Getting there: the reserve is 8 Km from Port Edward on the Izingolweni Road off the R61.

An entry fee is payable at the gate.
