Up Is Second Best University in SA

University of Pretoria Ranks Second in Sub-Saharan University Rankings

The University of Pretoria (UP) has solidified its position as one of Africa’s leading academic institutions, claiming the second spot in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan University Rankings for 2024. This marks a significant leap for UP, which climbed two places from its 2023 ranking, while the University of Johannesburg (UJ) secured the top position.

The 2024 rankings evaluated 129 universities across 22 countries, employing a robust methodology designed to address the specific challenges of Sub-Saharan Africa. The evaluation framework focused on five core areas: Resources and Finances, Access and Fairness, Ethical Leadership, Student Engagement, and Africa Impact.

South African universities dominated the list, with several institutions achieving notable placements. The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) ranked fourth, the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) 10th, Durban University of Technology (11th), North-West University (17th), the University of South Africa (Unisa) 25th, the University of Venda (41st), Tshwane University of Technology (51st), and St. Joseph Theological Institute (101st).

A Milestone for UP

UP’s vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Francis Petersen, hailed the achievement as a testament to the university’s transformative role in Africa.

“This ranking highlights UP’s commitment to tackling the continent’s unique challenges through impactful research, innovation, and inclusivity. By fostering African collaboration, celebrating heritage, and developing sustainable solutions, UP is advancing education and shaping the region’s future,” said Prof. Petersen.

The rankings also spotlighted the university’s emphasis on student engagement and inclusivity, with Prof. Petersen noting the role of student feedback in shaping institutional performance. “The inclusion of a student survey underscores the principles of ubuntu—the interconnectedness of community—placing students at the heart of UP’s growth and strategy,” he added.

Preparing for the Future

UP’s official statement highlighted its focus on equipping students with essential skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market. Through innovative teaching methods and practical applications, the university aims to prepare graduates to navigate the complexities of an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

“These skills balance technological proficiency with the human element, fostering knowledge professionals who are ready to meet the demands of the digital age,” the statement said.

A total of 171 universities participated in this year’s data collection process, but only 129 met the ranking criteria, which included sufficient student survey responses. The rankings continue to play a crucial role in benchmarking institutional excellence and fostering progress across the region.

As UP builds on this achievement, it remains a beacon of innovation and leadership in African higher education, driving sustainable development and fostering a bright future for the continent.
