This small reserve, about 28 ha in extent, is upstream from the mouth of the Ivungu River in Uvongo on the Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Uvongo is midway between Shelly Beach and Margate. The main road crosses the Ivungu River and the reserve stretches upstream from there.
Access can be gained by crossing the Ivungu river bridge to the south bank, then turn in at the first road to the right, a few hundred meters along this road past the tennis courts, turn right to Striders Club House. The reserve is about 130km from Durban.
There are footpaths starting on the lagoon on either side of the river and it’s well worth the walk. The lush riverine forest is home to a variety of bird species making the reserve popular amongst keen bird watchers. You can visit the reserve at any time – there is no access control.
Birds that you might spot are the African Black Duck, Wahlberg’s Eagle, African Crowned Eagle, African Fish Eagle, African Wood Owl, African Finfoot, Purple Crested Turaco and the rarely spotted Nerina Trogon. Relatively rare species such as Grey Sunbird, Purple-banded Sunbird, Grey Waxbill and numerous other interesting coastal birds occur in the reserve.
