Verlorenvlei-pelicansVerlorenvlei is one of the most important estuarine eco-systems in the Western Cape and one of the largest natural wetlands along the west coast of South Africa. It is also one of the few coastal fresh water lakes in the country. The vlei has been identified as an important bird area and is a RAMSAR listed site.

This bird rich vlei makes for a wonderful attraction en route to Elands Bay. Verlorenvlei is known for its wide variety of waterbirds, with over 240 species, including Great Crested Grebe, South African Shelduck, Goliath Herons and Caspian Terns. Scan the reedbed edges alongside the road that are home to Red-chested flufftail, African Purple Swamphen, Malachite Kingfishers and African Marsh-Harrier. The shores of the vlei are private property, but there are numerous good birding spots along the road as well as from the accommodation establishments on the banks of the vlei.  Read more

Getting there: take the N7 going north to Piketberg. Just before Piketberg, turn left onto the R366. Continue on the R366 to Elands Bay. Verlorenvlei is the long stretch of water leading in to Elands Bay.
