The Vleesbaai 4×4 Dune Route near Mossel Bay on the Garden Route puts a smile on any 4×4 enthusiasts face when talking about the great time they had there. Not only could they hone their dune and deep sand skills in a gorgeous environment overlooking the sea, but they could let the kids loose in the sand, and enjoy a family braai along the way. Vleesbaai Dune Route is a coastal trail on the farm Misgunst, 35 km from Mossel Bay. It is one of a few coastal 4×4 trails where dune driving is allowed so close to the beach. Route distance: 12 km | 2-4 hours. When you come to The Dune, make sure your tyre pressure is at 0.8 bars. It’s the only way you’ll make it up through the challenging sand.
You are not alone on the trail. Owner Riekie van Rensburg will provide you with a detailed map, but as the lines you need to take through the dunes shift with the wind, he puts up markers to indicate the best way through. Don’t have visions of being stuck out there in the sand. Should you need help along the way, just phone Riekie and he will appear like a knight in shining armour, in his 4×4 bakkie or tractor.
The campsite is comfortable, well equipped and boasts the most magnificent ocean views of the entire Vleesbaai area. Vleesbaai has two campsites – a comfortable, well-equipped one with ocean views, and a second, more cost-effective option. Be sure to specify where you want to stay when you book.
