Volksrust, Grass & Wetlands Region, Mpumalanga

Volksrust is a small agricultural town situated close to the border between Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal. The town has a significant Boer War past and has a number of historical attractions and monuments relating to its Afrikaaner history. The best known of these is Majuba Hill, where the British and the Boer’s fought a conflict-ending battle, with catastrophic losses among the British.

Two memorials in Volksrust bear testimony to lives lost at Majuba Hill and to the Boer women and children who died in a concentration camp in Volksrust during the Boer War.

History aside, Volksrust is a typically Afrikaans town. Crafts and home produce abound for the shopper and for the more adventurous, Volksrust offers paragliding from the Tamatieberg (Tomato Mountain) just north of Volksrust. Another popular activity is horse-riding.

Getting there: From Johannesburg take the N3 south toward Durban, turning off on to the R23 at exit 59 for Heidelberg.
