Volkswagen South Africa Issues Amarok Recall Over Braking System Concern
Volkswagen South Africa has notified the National Consumer Commission (NCC) of a recall affecting certain Amarok bakkies.
The recall involves Amarok models sold between 10 January and 12 June 2025, after the automaker identified a potential issue with the braking system that could compromise both functionality and safety.
A total of 374 vehicles are affected. Owners are urged to contact their nearest authorised dealership as soon as possible to have the issue addressed.
“VW has informed the NCC that these vehicles are being recalled due to the possible loss of braking assistance caused by the electromechanical brake servo control unit,” said Phetho Ntaba, NCC spokesperson.
“While the braking system remains operational, drivers may need to apply extra effort when braking. If this occurs while the vehicle is in motion, the stopping distance could be increased.”
Affected owners should schedule an inspection with an approved VW or VW Commercial Vehicles dealership, where necessary repairs will be carried out free of charge.
The NCC emphasised the importance of addressing such mechanical faults promptly, noting the risk they pose not only to the driver but also to other road users.
“Product recalls are vital to ensure safety in the marketplace, and prompt action by consumers is essential. The NCC is closely monitoring this recall in line with the Consumer Protection Act,” Ntaba added.
It is noteworthy that the Ford Ranger, manufactured in the same facility as the Amarok, was recently recalled over a similar braking system fault.
Volkswagen has issued multiple recalls in South Africa this year across various models, including the Polo, Polo Sedan, Taigo, and Golf.
- On 13 June 2025, VW recalled the Polo hatchback and Taigo crossover due to a defect in the front passenger airbag. The gas generators could fail to inflate the airbags properly during a collision, affecting 142 Polo units and 8 Taigo units.
- On 10 July 2025, the eight-generation Golf, including GTI and R variants, was recalled after 159 vehicles were found with front passenger seatbelts incorrectly secured due to a sewing error.
- Two weeks later, VW recalled 271 Polo Sedan models produced from 11 August 2022 to date, also over incorrectly fitted seatbelts.
The company continues to work with the NCC to ensure affected vehicles are repaired and remain safe for South African roads.
