Weenen Nature Reserve, Battlefields, KwaZulu-Nata

Weenen Nature Reserve is officially situated in the Battlefields region of KwaZulu-Natal but is also close to the Natal Midlands and can be included in the Midlands Meander as well as the Battlefields Route if you need a break. This 5000 ha reserve was proclaimed in 1974 to rehabilitate and preserve this particularly scenic area of undulating thornveld with the backdrop of the distant Drakensberg Mountains and the spectacular gorge created by the Bushman’s River.

Black and white rhino have been introduced as well as giraffe, buffalo, red hartebeest, eland, zebra, klipspringer, ostrich, common reedbuck, and roan antelope. Black-backed jackal, hyaena, bushbuck, steenbok and grey duiker are also present in the reserve. 230 bird species have been recorded and there are two hides overlooking the dam.

Facilities are excellent with a good quality road system and extensive game viewing facilities. There is an 8km guided walk and three self-guided trails and three picnic sites with benches and braai facilities.

The campsite has seven stands with electricity and five without. The UmKhombe Cottage has five beds and is fully equipped.

Open in summer from 5h00 to 19h00 and in winter from 6h00 to 18h00
