Michelle Waldeck, winemaker at Benguela Cove Wine Estate, has been selected for the prestigious WineLand 30 Under 30 list in 2024, a testament to her remarkable contributions and potential in the South African wine industry. This accolade celebrates the industry’s rising stars, innovators, and key players driving change and generating revenue. “This is quite an honour,” Michelle expressed, reflecting her humility and gratitude.
The 30 Under 30 list, released on June 1, 2024, with an awards ceremony held in Cape Town on June 14, spotlights thirty young professionals across various roles in the wine industry. “There is reason for optimism among the 30 winemakers, viticulturists, influencers, sommeliers, wine marketers, professors, brand ambassadors (and everything else in between) featured in our 5th annual WineLand 30 Under 30,” WineLand stated. This celebration aims to pave the way for prosperity, especially for the youth contributing to the industry’s dreams and purpose.
"Carla van der Merwe of WineLand magazine highlighted Michelle's journey in an article titled "Growing with the Brand."
Seven years into her career at Benguela Cove, Michelle’s path to success shows no signs of slowing down. Her passion for winemaking was ignited during an internship at a local winery, where theoretical knowledge came to life in the practical environment of the red wine cellar. There, she met Johann Fourie, Benguela Cove’s head winemaker, and joined his team shortly after.
Mentored by Johann and the winery’s owner, Penny Streeter OBE, Michelle quickly became an integral part of the Benguela Cove family. Penny’s journey from the ground up served as a constant reminder that success stems from hard work. Michelle’s dedication and the opportunities she’s had, both locally and internationally, have allowed her to witness the evolution of a wine brand firsthand.
Michelle’s achievements include numerous awards at prestigious wine shows and a nomination for the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year award. She attributes her success to her exceptional team, highlighting the collaborative effort behind their award-winning wines.
Beyond personal achievements, Michelle is passionate about mentoring the next generation of winemakers. She aims to foster a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment, contributing to the positive changes within the South African wine industry. Michelle is excited about the industry’s collective efforts to elevate South African wines on the global stage.
In addition to her WineLand 30 Under 30 recognition, Michelle’s Cool Climate Cabernet Sauvignon ranked in the Top 10 at the 2024 Winemag Next Generation Awards, a new competition sponsored by FedEx Express and convened by Winemag.co.za. The awards, aimed at identifying South Africa’s emerging winemaking talent, required entrants to be under 35 years old. Sixty-two wines from thirty-seven entrants were blind-tasted by a panel including Winemag.co.za editor Christian Eedes, South African Sommelier Association chairman Spencer Fondaumiere, and wine writer Malu Lambert.
Michelle Waldeck’s accolades and her ongoing commitment to excellence are a source of pride for Benguela Cove Wine Estate. As she continues to grow and inspire others in the industry, the future of South African wine looks incredibly promising.
