The University of the Witwatersrand is one of Africa’s top educational institutes, close to the city of Johannesburg. For almost ninety years and with well over 100,000 graduates, Wits has been recognised nationally and internationally as the Alma Mater of many students who continued in life to make a huge contribution to society. Wits has highly qualified and internationally acclaimed academic staff and offers the students social vibrancy as well as cultural diversity.
The main campus in Braamfontein occupies over 68 hectares, and is divided by the M1 Motorway into the original East Campus, with its historic buildings and famous great hall, and the newer West Campus, which are linked by an impressive walkway, the Amic Deck.
The East Campus is home to the faculties of science and humanities, as well as the University Senate and administration. The commerce, engineering and law faculties are situated on the West Campus. The Faculty of Health Sciences and the Wits Management School is situated in the adjacent suburb of Parktown.
There are five faculties which comprise 34 schools – engineering and the built environment, health science, humanities, science and commerce, law and management, each offering a range of internationally recognised degree courses and postgraduate studies. Over a third of the student body consists of postgraduate students, and there are many international students.
The Wits MBA programme was voted the best in South Africa for six consecutive years in the Financial Mail annual survey and has entered into a partnership with the London Business School, one of the world’s top ranked Business Schools, to run an International Executive Development Programme.
The Wits Medical and Dental Schools are also in the top league in the country. Training is offered with practical experience in five major hospitals in Johannesburg as well as several rural hospitals, the state of the art Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre and various clinics.
Wits runs a number of programmes aimed at identifying young people from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds but who have strong academic potential. The goal is to increase their academic, social and psychological preparation for admission to and success at Wits or other South African universities.
The campus facilities include two central libraries and twelve branch libraries with over 1½ million books; 42 sports clubs; 60 student societies; the Wits Theatre; art galleries; a concert hall and 14 museums. The University has 18 residences which accommodate 17% of the student population and accommodation is available in surrounding suburbs.
