The Zululand Rhino Reserve is a 20 000 ha belt of private conservation land that has been established as a reserve to protect the endangered Black Rhino.
The reserve is ground-breaking in its efforts for Black Rhino conservation. In October 2005, 21 Black Rhino were released into the reserve. In the past, Black Rhino in South Africa were the most numerous of all the rhino species in the world, but a catastrophic poaching wave wiped 96% of the species out, with numbers dwindling to approximately 2500.
Thanks to the efforts of the reserve, in conjunction with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, those numbers have risen gradually to approximately 3600 Black Rhinos. The reserve has also joined forces with the WWF to preserve these majestic creatures.
Getting there: from Durban, take the N2 to Richard’s Bay. Continue through Richard’s Bay on the N2 and the turn off to the reserve will be on your left hand side off the N2.
